Prepare for Battle: Join the Fight, Fun, and Festivities This May!
May is fast approaching, and with it comes one of the most thrilling historical events in the region—the Battle of Lewes! On May 9th, 10th and 11th, Lewes comes alive with medieval reenactments, fascinating talks, thrilling jousting, and much more...
This year marks the 760th anniversary of the first ever recorded parliament, a pivotal moment in history that shaped the future of democracy. Here’s a sneak peek into why this event is a must-attend for anyone looking to experience a unique piece of Sussex’s past.

The Battle Begins…
It all kicks off on Saturday, May 10th at 10:30 am with an exciting reenactment of the famous Battle of Lewes that took place in 1264. This historic clash saw the forces of Simon de Montfort and his rebel barons defeat King Henry III and Prince Edward. The medieval battle will play out through the town, moving from The Gallops at the top of town all the way to Convent Field and The Priory and with it, plenty of armed combat along the way!
Alongside the reenactment, the Medieval Village will be bustling from 10:00 am, with medieval stalls, archery, axe throwing, falconry, and catapults to get your medieval fix. But that’s not all... Step into a true 13th-century experience with 13th Century Jousting on both days. This exciting new addition is bound to thrill as knights engage in a fast-paced, fierce battle of strength, skill, and endurance, showcasing how it all went down with melee weapons in the 1200s.

A Weekend Full of Entertainment
But the Battle of Lewes is more than just a reenactment—it’s a full weekend of fun, history, and celebration. Friday, May 9th sets the stage with a battlefield walk (led by Battlefields Trust’s John Freeman) and an outdoor screening of “A Knight’s Tale”, the Heath Ledger classic, at Convent Field. Bring your blanket, grab some food from the local vendors, and enjoy a fantastic medieval film under the stars. Make sure to book your free ticket to confirm your place!
As night falls on Saturday, May 10th, the action doesn’t stop. Get ready for a legendary performance by Chris Slade, former drummer of AC/DC, and his band, The Chris Slade Timeline. Yes, the real Chris Slade will be performing! Whether you’re a fan of rock or simply want to enjoy an electrifying performance, this is the perfect way to wind down after a day of medieval fun.
