Lights, Camera, Sussex! 5 Top Films Shot in Our Beautiful Backyard

Lights, Camera, Sussex! 5 Top Films Shot in Our Beautiful Backyard

We like to think we have a keen eye for standout locations! So it’s no surprise that Sussex, with its rolling downs, charming villages, and dramatic coastline, has caught the eye of more than a few filmmakers over the years. Some of the silver screen’s most iconic moments were filmed right on our doorstep !

1. Atonement (2007)

Redlands Farmhouse, Seaford

Joe Wright’s sweeping epic isn’t just remembered for James McAvoy and Keira Knightley looking moody in period dress. The final scenes were shot at Seaford’s white cliffs, delivering a dramatic backdrop that gives even our finest sea view listings a run for their money. If you ever fancied living somewhere worthy of a tragic love story this is it!!

Agent’s Note: Seaford remains a hidden gem on the coast. Cliffside properties here offer blockbuster views without the Brighton price tag.

 2. The Monuments Men (2014)

Charleston Farmhouse & South Downs

George Clooney, Bill Murray, and Sussex countryside in one frame? Yes, it happened. Charleston, once home to the Bloomsbury Group was the perfect backdrop for this WWII art heist drama. If it’s good enough for Clooney, it’s good enough for us.

Agent’s Note: Properties in the South Downs National Park come with heritage, views, and no shortage of local culture. Just be prepared to compete with history buffs and hikers.

3. The Theory of Everything (2014)

Sussex University & Surrounding Areas

While much of this Stephen Hawking biopic is set in Cambridge, several academic scenes were sneakily filmed at the University of Sussex. Filmmakers loved the architecture and leafy surrounds, and so do we.

Agent’s Note: Falmer and the surrounding areas offer a lovely blend of student buzz and countryside calm, perfect for academics, families, and anyone who enjoys a decent cappuccino within walking distance. And if you are a football fan you can catch an Albion game at the mighty AMEX stadium.

4. Hope Gap (2019)

Seaford, Cuckmere Haven, and More

Annette Bening and Bill Nighy brought some serious emotional drama to Seaford in this quietly powerful film about love, loss, and middle-aged heartbreak. The scenery is stunning and was also used in the block buster Robin Hood Prince Of thieves as Kevin Costner returned home after his escape from The Crusades!

Agent’s Note: Cuckmere Haven has that “wow” factor buyers dream about. Properties near the Seven Sisters rarely stay on the market long (and frankly, who can blame them?).

5. Quadrophenia (1979)

Brighton Seafront

An absolute cult classic and a time capsule for mod culture, Quadrophenia gave Brighton its iconic cinematic moment. Scooters, riots, and rock and roll and all just a pebble’s throw from the pier.

Agent’s Note: Brighton remains as edgy and eclectic as ever. From period townhouses in Kemp Town to hidden gems in Hanover, there’s a home here for every rebel with (or without) a cause.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, Sussex isn’t just a filming location, it’s a lifestyle. Whether you’re chasing Hollywood worthy scenery, historic homes, or simply a quiet life in the countryside, Sussex delivers in spades.

If any of these locations tickled your cinematic fancy, get in touch. We might not be able to sell you a starring role, but we can show you a few houses with real screen presence.

June is National Homeownership Month, a time to celebrate the many benefits of owning a home and reflect on the importance of helping people find their place in the world. Here at Oakley, as proud agents serving Brighton, Shoreham, Lewes and Mid Sussex, we see every day just how life changing homeownership can be.

The summer holidays are finally here, and if you’re a parent in Brighton, Shoreham, or Lewes, you’re likely on the lookout for exciting, affordable, and family friendly activities to keep the kids entertained. Luckily, our part of Sussex is packed with things to do, whether you’re after a seaside adventure, woodland walks, or hands-on workshops.

At first glance, National Ice Cream Month might seem like a celebration strictly for sweet tooths across the pond — it was, after all, declared by President Ronald Reagan in the U.S. back in 1984. But here in Sussex, we think it’s the perfect excuse to embrace summer, community, and those small joys that make life (and home) extra sweet.

With technology at our fingertips and expert photographers on hand, we simply will not tolerate terrible photography, and it can certainly harm your chances of selling your home if you get them wrong. If your property photographs are dark, dingy, or taken from unflattering angles, a buyer will just keep on scroll past!
