Supporting Our Community: The Invaluable Work of Furniture Now!

Discover the incredible impact of Furniture Now! a local charity transforming lives in Sussex. We're proud to highlight their vital community role and our strong partnership, helping clients with property clearances and furnishing new homes.

As dedicated estate agents , we understand that moving house involves more than just buying or selling a property. It's a significant life event, often accompanied by the need to clear out old items and furnish new spaces. This is where our invaluable partnership with Furniture Now! truly shines, offering a sustainable and community focused solution for our clients and the wider Sussex area.

What is Furniture Now!?

Furniture Now! is a fantastic local charity based in Sussex that plays a crucial role in our community. Their core mission is to collect unwanted furniture and household goods, diverting them from landfill and making them available at affordable prices to individuals and families in need. Amazingly Only 17% of discarded furniture is recycled with 670,000 tons of furniture discarded each year in UK alone!

They operate a number of showrooms across Sussex, including Eastbourne, Hailsham and more recently their shiny new home in Lewes! The commercial team at Oakley were delighted to work with Furniture Now! in securing their new permanent home at Sketch Place in Lewes. Conveniently located just opposite Tesco in the town centre, it instantly felt like the perfect fit.

The charity's work extends far beyond simply reselling items. They provide essential support to those facing hardship, including individuals on low incomes, people fleeing domestic violence, those transitioning out of homelessness, and families struggling to furnish their homes. By offering good quality, pre-loved items at a fraction of the cost of new, Furniture Now helps create comfortable and dignified living environments for countless people who might otherwise go without.

A Vital Role in the Community

The impact of Furniture Now! on the community is multi-faceted and profound:

  • Environmental Sustainability: By reusing furniture, they significantly reduce waste going to landfill, promoting a circular economy and lessening our environmental footprint. This aligns perfectly with growing awareness around sustainability and responsible consumption.
  • Social Inclusion: They support those in furniture poverty within the communities by offering a discount scheme on already affordable prices. This fosters a greater sense of stability and wellbeing.
  • Employment and Training: Furniture Now! also offers valuable volunteering and training opportunities, helping individuals gain new skills, build confidence, and move towards employment. This contributes to local economic development and personal empowerment.
  • Community Hub: Their showrooms often act as informal community hubs, fostering connections and providing a welcoming space for people from all walks of life.

Our Strong Links: Helping Clients and Community

At Oakley we are incredibly proud to have forged a strong and meaningful partnership with Furniture Now! We regularly recommend their services to our clients, particularly those who are:

  • Clearing Properties: When clients are downsizing, managing an inherited property, or simply decluttering before a sale, they often have good quality furniture they no longer need. Instead of these items ending up in a skip (which the client may even be charged for), we encourage them to contact Furniture Now! for collection. This not only simplifies the clearance process for our clients but also ensures their unwanted items go to a good cause.
  • Furnishing New Homes: For clients moving into a new property, especially first time buyers or those on a tighter budget, Furniture Now! offers an excellent resource for furnishing their new home affordably and sustainably. It's a win-win, they save money and they support a local charity.

This partnership allows us to offer a sustainable and real service to clients, addressing practical moving challenges while simultaneously contributing positively to the community we serve. It's about more than just transactions; it's about building a stronger, more supportive Sussex.

Lewes Director David Beaken commented Furniture Now! provide a truly vital service. We often meet clients who simply don’t know where to start when it comes to clearing a property before a sale. It can be an emotional process, so knowing that donations will go to a good cause is a real comfort. On the other side, a big empty property can feel daunting to furnish – but the team at Furniture Now! always seem to have just the right solution.”
