May marks National Walking Month — the perfect time to lace up your shoes, embrace the warmer weather, and explore the beautiful walking trails and charming villages Sussex has to offer. Whether you're a lifelong local or considering a move to the area, there’s no better way to experience the character of Sussex than on foot.
Why Walkability Matters in Property?
For many homebuyers, walkability is more than just a lifestyle perk, it's a key part of their decision-making. Easy access to shops, schools, green spaces, and transport links adds real value to a property. It’s also great for mental health, fitness, and reducing our environmental footprint.
As local property people, we know the villages and neighborhoods that offer the best combination of community, convenience, and countryside charm. Here are a few of our favorites:
Top Walks and Walkable Villages in Sussex
1. Lewes & South Downs Way
A historic market town and home of the Lewes Property Hub, surrounded by the South Downs National Park. You can walk from Lewes straight onto the South Downs Way, offering panoramic views and peaceful trails. The town centre is packed with independent shops, cafés, and culture.
2. Arundel & Arundel Park
Known for its castle and riverside setting, Arundel offers a magical blend of nature and heritage (no surprise one of our Directors recently got married here!). The walk around Swanbourne Lake and into Arundel Park is a must, and the town itself is ideal for strolling, with everything from antique shops to tearooms just minutes apart.
3. Alfriston & The Cuckmere Valley
A postcard-perfect village with thatched cottages, a village green, and the start of some of the most iconic South Downs walks. A loop through the Cuckmere Valley offers some of the most Instagram-worthy views in Sussex.
4. Petworth & Petworth Park
With its grand deer park (designed by Capability Brown) and stylish town centre, Petworth combines elegant walking routes with a vibrant local community. A great spot for buyers seeking charm, character, and culture.
5. Seaford to Eastbourne via Seven Sisters
This coastal walk is one of the most spectacular in the UK. There is no doubt you will have seen it on the big screen as The Seven Sisters cliffs in were used as a filming location for the beginning of the movie "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves". Specifically, the opening scene where Robin Hood (played by Kevin Costner) returns home from the Crusades. While it’s more of a day trip, Seaford and Eastbourne both offer walkable town centers and are increasingly popular among families and retirees.
