Who doesn't love a pub garden in the summer? Here are 5 excellent pubs to add to your list this summer!
1. The Ram Inn – Firle
Tucked into the South Downs, The Ram is the ultimate countryside pub. The garden backs onto fields and feels like something out of a film set. Locals love it for Sunday roasts and lazy summer lunches under the apple trees.
Why we love it - Wildflowers, historic charm, and unbeatable views. Oh and a very good rosé we hear!
2. The Horse Guards Inn – Tillington
Just outside Petworth, this pub oozes character and creativity. The garden is more “curated secret meadow” than beer garden, and the seasonal menu is superb. A must-visit if you’re exploring West Sussex villages.
Why we love it - Move here and you’ve got this on your doorstep.
3. The Crown – Hastings Old Town
A modern classic on the coast. The Crown is artsy, dog-friendly, and buzzing with local energy. The garden is small but perfectly formed, with a laid-back vibe and views over the rooftops. Great for post-beach pints.
Why we love it: Perfect mix of town energy and seaside calm.
4. The Anchor Inn – Barcombe
A riverside gem where you can literally row up to the pub. Yes, really. Hire a boat from Barcombe Mills and enjoy a pint in one of the most peaceful garden spots in Sussex. Ideal for families, wild swimmers, or romantic escapees.
Why we love it: Feels like a mini holiday. Bonus: zero traffic noise.
5. The Ginger Fox – Albourne
A stylish gastro-pub just outside Brighton, with a huge garden, kids’ play area, and seriously good food. Great for sunny lunches, and ideal if you're viewing homes in Hurstpierpoint, Hassocks, or Ditchling.
Why we love it: Classy country vibes just 20 minutes from the city.
6. The Royal Oak – Poynings
Right at the foot of Devil’s Dyke, this one’s a South Downs classic. The garden has panoramic views and is perfect for walkers, cyclists, and sunset seekers. Proper pub grub and local ales seal the deal.
Why we love it: Ideal first (or last) stop on a day out in the Downs.
Location isn’t just about postcodes. It’s about where you spend your weekends, where you walk the dog, and which beer garden becomes “your local.”
Wild Card - The Hangleton Manor
Located in Hangleton just at the entrance to the Benfiled Valley nature reserve, this one sneaks in as it holds a special place in the hearts of Shoreham & Lewes Directors Nick and David. This was their favorite pub in their teens and early twenties, in fact David worked behind the bar in his college days and still lives just up the road.
But it's not just nostalgia that helps The Manor find it's way on to this list it! Dating back to the 15th century it is believed to be one of, if not the oldest buildings in Brighton & Hove.
And of course, it has a pretty fabulous beer garden, and if legend is correct there is a secret passage leading to St Helens Church where the ghost of The Manor walks each night looking for their baby!
