Discover the Joy of Parkrun: Your Guide to Running in Brighton & Hove, Shoreham and Lewes

Looking for a fantastic way to boost your fitness, meet new people, and enjoy the great outdoors? Parkrun offers a brilliant solution! Read on to discover what makes these events so special and where you can join in locally.

Parkrun has become a global phenomenon, transforming Saturday mornings for millions. But what exactly is it, and why has it captured the hearts (and feet) of so many across the UK, including here in Sussex?

What is Parkrun?

At its core, Parkrun is a free, weekly, timed 5k event held in parks and open spaces around the world. It's open to everyone, regardless of age or ability. Whether you're a seasoned runner aiming for a personal best, a casual jogger, a walker enjoying the scenery, or even pushing a buggy, Parkrun welcomes you. The emphasis is firmly on participation, community, and enjoyment, not competition.

Each event is organised by volunteers, making it a truly community driven initiative. To take part, you simply register once online at www.parkrun.org.uk, print your barcode, and bring it along to any event. After you finish, your barcode is scanned, and you'll receive an email with your time, allowing you to track your progress over weeks and months.

Why is Parkrun So Popular?

The popularity of Parkrun stems from several key factors:
  • Accessibility: It's free, making it accessible to all income levels.
  • Inclusivity: Walkers, joggers, runners, and volunteers are all equally valued. There's no pressure to perform, just to participate.
  • Community Spirit: Parkrun fosters a wonderful sense of community. It's a fantastic way to meet like minded people, make new friends, and feel part of something positive.
  • Health & Wellbeing: Regular physical activity is crucial for both physical and mental health. Parkrun provides a consistent, motivating reason to get active.
  • Simplicity: The concept is straightforward, and the events are well organised, making it easy for newcomers to join.
  • Volunteering Opportunities: For those who prefer not to run or walk, volunteering is a rewarding way to contribute and be part of the Parkrun family.

The Oakley Team LOVE Parkrun

Chris Oakley "I have done Preston Park before! Turned up on my own and was quite pensive about joining in, but immediately met people I knew and really enjoyed the camaraderie, park runs are a really social event and good for runners of all abilities!"
Dimple Lathia "I have done the Preston Park, parkrun. I thought it was really well organised, great community feel and everyone was so helpful and friendly. The first time I did it we didn’t really know how it all worked, they do a briefing for all the newbies explaining the course and where to get your chip from so they can track your time. There's volunteers standing around the course cheering you on and guiding you. It was a great event and gives you a good feel on what its like on a race event day."
Carolyn Clarke "I have taken part in Parkrun in both Lewes and Seaford. I had never run much before so was unsure as to what to expect and a little nervous. But I didn't need to be, everyone was very friendly and welcoming. Lewes is great but Seaford is a bit special, it is lovely being right on the seafront, especially on a sunny day"
